Reptarenavirus PCR
Why?
Reptarenaviruses are associated with boa inclusion body disease (BIBD). Screening is relevant when introducing boas, before breeding or before sale.
Screening may be particularly relevant:
- During quarantine of a new animal
- Before introduction into an established collection
- Before breeding
- As part of health documentation before transfer or sale
What are the limitations?
PCR detects reptarenavirus nucleic acid in the submitted sample. A negative result means that reptarenavirus was not detected in that sample at the time of testing. As viral shedding and distribution may vary, a single negative result cannot completely exclude infection. In situations with increased risk or clinical suspicion, repeat testing and/or additional diagnostic evaluation may be appropriate.
Blood smear examination for characteristic inclusion bodies may provide complementary information in boas when BIBD is suspected. This requires blood sampling and is not part of the current ERHR screening service.
Nidovirus has also been detected in boas. Both analyses can be run on one and the same dry oral swab – you add the second analysis during ordering. No extra sample is needed.
Price: €89 for 1 animal · lower cost per animal with more animals
Kit: The kit includes the required materials and step-by-step instructions. ERHR confirms the specimen method for your animal and test before dispatch.
Expected process: Order the kit, link the animal, collect and return the sample, then view the laboratory result on the animal record.
